When we left Vermont for winter break in Virgina we left at the beginning of a snow storm. We were worried about all the snow we would get while we were gone and how we would get back in to our house with no one to shovel the stairs and walkway. But when we arrived home at midnight we were met with a very pleasant surprise. We are lucky enough to have a very nice landlord, who stopped by and shoveled our walk way and a walk way to the oil tank. We got another couple inches of snow last week and now we have tall snow mounds on each side of the walk way to our front door.
Before winter break I decided I wanted to try and get back into shape, but with the frigid temperatures and mounds of snow outside, jogging, hiking or any outdoor (free) activity is out of the question. So I decided to try some work out Dvds. We have a netflix account so I ordered many different types of work out DVDs and they came in the mail once we returned from vacation. I think I found one I like, it's a kick boxing workout. Now that I have been working out or maybe its that it is the new year, Brian has been motivated to get back in to shape too (maybe that is his new year's resolution?). He does go skiing once a week, twice if he finds the time with his school schedule, but now Brian wants to purchase an elliptical machine, so that we both can get a good cardio work out everyday of the week. I am hesitant to do this because it is a lot of money to invest in something that we may use for only a couple of months and then never use again. I chose to try workout DVDs because it doesn't cost me anything and if I stick with it for six months then I could invest some money either in a gym membership or home gym equipment. But Brian wants to look into getting an elliptical machine. We have tried looking up information about elliptical machines but we just don't know what we need. We don't want to spend a lot of money but we don't want the cheapest one either. We want something that would work for a beginner. I read that we need something with an 18 inch stride due to our height, but I do not know if this is true.
Does anyone have an elliptical machine or have any advice on what we should look for?

go to a sporting goods store and they them out, then get online and see what you can find. I got the Schwinn 418 from Overstock.com and it was priced great, I found a coupon online that worked for it too. Cheap shipping and very easy to put together. I love mine.
Brian always wants to spend money! I say stick with the DVDS and your body, we have done the whole exercise routine equipment thing and it always comes back to the same thing, the DVDs and our stick to it thing....
My advice... wait for a couple months then hit play it again sports. When people give up their resolutions you will probably find them on craigslist for cheap or something. I live videos too, but that just ain't happening in my life :-)
